Deciding on your home décor style is just as important as finding your forever home! Once you find it, you make it yours. Add your own style, character, and colors to represent yourself. Make your home a place that you love to be in, a relaxing and comforting space that is all your own. When people come in the door, they should say, “Wow, this is so you!” Your style should be evident throughout your home, and you do that with your décor.

Interior Decorator
Interior decorating can be done in 1 of 2 ways. You do it yourself, or you hire someone to do it for you. It can be amazing to just tell someone the kind of colors and styles you like, and have them take care of it all. You just walk into the unveiling and voila! Now you have a beautiful house full of your style. Just remember – an Interior Decorator does not deal with renovations or structural planning. They take over the visual aspect of home décor – bringing the room together through colors and textures. Professional interior decorators have the skills to bring your vision to life with furniture, lighting, window treatments, and accessories.
Interior Designer
On the other hand, interior designers work with more structural aspects. They can help you with the best window placement, which walls should come down to achieve the look you are going for, and space planning for optimal function. Using computer aided design (CAD), they are able to show you what the home will potentially look like. They can also give you options and new ideas you may not have though of. Interior designers work closely with carpenters and architects and see the job through to the end.
Hiring a decorator or a designer depends on your time, your budget, and your style. If you need it done in record time, you have the money to do it, and you have no clue how to get your style across and bring a room together on your own, then go for it! They can do amazing work and you will be thrilled with the outcome. But, if you have some time and feel confident that you can do it on your own, awesome! There are so many home décor ideas on Pinterest nowadays that you should be able to implement a few that you love into your own home. Or maybe you already have a vision for your home, or a theme for each room – with some time and the right pieces, you can definitely pull it off and bring it to life.

~Styles~
Farmhouse
The farmhouse style is increasingly popular and has been for a while now. This style is all about simplicity and natural colors. Think white kitchen cabinets, wood accents, shiplap, galvanized steel. It’s about having some rustic charm and a warm feeling throughout. Keeping with a neutral color palette will help to blend your rooms together. The style also is best achieved with cool vintage pieces like repurposed dressers, wire baskets, and a mixture of old and new furniture and décor.
Modern
For modern styles, embrace minimalism and clean lines. Again, a lot of white and neutral colors, along with some black to break up the neutrals. Few walls and lots of large windows are important in order to achieve a modern style. Open, airy, and natural – with no clutter or fussiness. Sometimes modern homes can feel a bit stiff, so adding some greenery can help to avoid that. Think about using minimal decorations, and adding some cool modern furniture if you like the modern style. Keep the walls white and the curtains open!
Industrial
This is a style that combines unexpected materials that were usually used in building old factories and industrial spaces. It has been a big style in converted lofts, but it’s been growing in popularity in regular homes as well. To add an industrial feel to your home, start with mixing raw materials. This can be achieved with reclaimed woods & metals. It’s sort of an edgy, masculine style. Think pallet walls, brick, and exposed pipes.
Eclectic
Having eclectic taste means liking a little bit of everything! Combining styles, trends, textures, colors, and time periods is how to achieve this look. You need to go about it carefully though. Choose colors and styles that “go” together or can form a cohesive look. It’s easy to get carried away and look tacky. You can have some loud pieces and colors, with other pieces and colors that compliment. Old fashioned furniture with some fun patterns and modern furniture can absolutely work together. Just try to keep some similar colors and shapes to unify the room.
Country
Now, country style home décor can be very similar to farmhouse. However, true country adds in a bit more color instead of neutrals. Warm, deep colors can be played with here. More plaids and patterns, wicker furniture, lots of wood, and some floral accents help to achieve this look. The country style is an inviting, homey style – and a wood burning stove is a must!
Nautical
This style is most popular near bodies of water. It incorporates blues, ocean and sailing décor, and natural wood tones. Think beachy vibes – lots of bold blues and bright whites. Stripes are very popular, as are anchors and sea creatures. Add some rope elements, boat oars, and photos of ships. For a pop of color, try coral or red!
Mediterranean
The Mediterranean style differs by country. They incorporate different colors, but keep a fresh, airy, natural vibe. Earth tones and natural materials are a big part of this design. My personal favorite is the style from Greece. (Think Mama Mia!) It incorporates bright white and all shades of blue and green, plus greenery, flowers, and stone. Lots of open spaces, natural light, and of course a great outdoor living area.
Where to Shop
When figuring out your taste and how you’d like to decorate your home, its nice to get a feel of how to bring a room together from pictures. Check out Pinterest for great ideas in any color scheme. My Pinterest is https://www.pinterest.com/buyingstyle/, so you can start there!
Once you have an idea of what style you like, start shopping! Flea markets and antique shows are sooo fun to browse around and find amazing, one of a kind pieces. Add character to your home simply by bringing in a mix of old and new. Redo or paint a few things to really show your style.
Online shopping is of course fun! No waiting in lines or fighting over parking spaces. Everything is literally right at your finger tips. I always have good luck finding key pieces at Target. Even The Home Depot has an amazing online home section now! And of course, Amazon has just about everything you could possibly need.
Or…get out and find your pieces! Grab a friend and go to craft shows, home décor specialty stores, and even second hand stores! Sometimes you can get great pieces for much less than it was originally priced.
The point is, haven fun with it! This is your home. Your space to feel you at the end of the day. To look forward to coming home to, and to feel proud to show off! What’s your favorite home décor style? Leave a comment and let me know!
